*Summer Update*

Wow, the summer has just flown by this year! It’s been exciting, busy, and a lot of fun. Definitely the most fun I’ve ever had at a job. We had the Saw Fest in the middle of July, the Soldotna Progress Days in late July, and the Soldotna Creek Park Market every Wednesday.  We also had 2 Kid Day Camps in July. This was our first year doing these, and it’s really gone over even better than we could’ve hoped. Deandra and I both love working with kids, and being a huge rock hound myself, I get the biggest kick out of sharing that with kids.

The 1st camp had 12 kids attending, while the July 29th camp had 23 kids, ranging in age from 3 to 13. It took myself, Deandra, and Miner Mike to do that camp. Last week was 11 kids. We are looking forward to this coming Friday camp. It will be our last of the season, but we are already planning on some kind of winter activities for homeschool and public school groups.

We had so many cool people come through here this summer. I met people from New Zealand, Germany, Israel, Switzerland and Japan (to name just a few). And of course folks from all over the USA. It’s great how many people stop by to try their hand at gold panning or gem panning.

I think the biggest compliment was from a little girl about 4 years old. She and her family were here for the Saw Fest, and she did the gem panning and went in the Gem Mine a couple times. On their last day in Alaska, she made her parents bring her back out, because, her dad explained with a sigh, when they’d asked her what she wanted to do on her last day of vacation, she wanted to come back out to Prospector John’s! She did the gem mine again, and the gem panning. She was so darn cute, and when they left she told us very seriously that she would definitely be back next year. She said this was her favorite place on their whole vacation. How awesome is that?

This coming weekend we have the Anchorage Saturday Market to attend, and the following weekend we have the Kenai Peninsula Fair in Ninilchik. I’m excited! Please come and see us there!
